Keepit was brought into service in 1960 with one 6MW unit and subsequently upgraded in 1983 to 7.2MW.

It generates on contracted water allocations to the cotton farming industry in the Namoi region. It is a major recreational area for the district providing fishing, sailing and water recreation activities.

Keepit Power Station supplies emergency electricity support for the Keepit Village and dam works. The Power Station returned to service in December 2013 after major works were completed including the installation of a new generator transformer, circuit breaker, automatic voltage regulator and a major overhaul of Turbine.

Keepit Power Station is connected to Gunnedah Substation by a 66kV transmission line.
