The Wheao and Flaxy Scheme uses water from the Rangitaiki River, Wheao River and Flaxy Creek. Wheao Powerhouse has two generators, each delivering 12 MW; while Flaxy Powerhouse has a single generator delivering 2.1 MW. The Scheme’s average annual power production is 111 GWh.

Environment and recreation

The Rangitaiki Canal provides an excellent recreational fishery and there’s also handy fishing in the Wheao Canal. We have a weed-management strategy which supports the sustainability of canal fishing, without inhibiting water flows to the station.

Extensive trout monitoring and investigations have confirmed the Wheao and Flaxy Scheme causes no negative effect on trout numbers or the health of the rivers.

Resource Consents expire from 2026.
